Generalsodium saccharin

Sodium saccharin is a white, odorless, and intensely sweet crystalline powder. It is primarily an artificial sweetener and approximately 300 times as sweet as sucrose (regular sugar). Sodium saccharin is most commonly used as a food additive to sweeten products such as candies, vitamins, salad dressings, gum, table sweeteners, jam, canned fruit, drinks, medicines, toothpaste and much more. It is also used in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and electroplating industries as a nickel plating brightener.

Unlike aspartame, another type of artificial sweetener, sodium saccharin is stable when heated, even in the presence of acids. Sodium saccharin has excellent storage characteristics with a long shelf life of approximately 3-4 years and does not react chemically with other food ingredients.

Storage

Sodium saccharin should be stored in a cool, dry place at all times in a tightly sealed container. This material can be combustible at high temperatures, so it is critical to ensure that it is kept away from extreme heat, sources of ignition and any oxidizing agents. Sodium saccharin should also be at ground level at all times in order to prevent spills or open exposure. It should always be stored in a well-ventilated facility and all empty containers should be properly disposed as they can still pose as a fire hazard.

History

Sodium Saccharin was first produced in 1879 by Constantin Fahlberg, who was a chemist working on coal tar derivatives at the Johns Hopkins University.Throughout his research he accidentally discovered its intensely sweet flavor. In 1884, Fahlberg applied for patents in several countries as he described methods of producing this chemical, which he called saccharin. Sodium saccharin only truly became popular during the sugar shortages throughout World War I, even though it was launched to the public shortly after it’s discovery. It became even more popular throughout the 1960s and 1970s with dieters as sodium saccharin is a calorie and colesteral free sweetener. Sodium saccharin is commonly found in restaurants and grocery stores in pink pouches under the popular brand "Sweet'N Low". A number of  beverages are sweetened with sodium saccharin, the most popular being Coca-Cola, which was introduced in 1963 as a diet cola soft drink.

Health Benefits

Sodium saccharin is used as an artificial sweetener going into foods and beverages without the intake of carbohydrates and calories that would be included with many natural sugars. These benefits mae sodium saccharin especially significant for diabetics as it travels directly through the human digestive system without ever being digested and without the calorie and carbohydrate intake. It is also recommended for these same reasons to anyone requiring weight loss or on a diet. Sodium saccharin has also been proven to lower the risk of cavities in your teeth.
